The Wall Street JournalでAMDがATi買収交渉の報道
どうもよくわからないが、これはコプロセッサ構想絡みなんだろうか？だとすると花開くのは3～4年を待たなくてはならない話で、果たしてわざわざ買収する必要性があるのだろうかと思う。
前回は噂レベルでしか伝わっていなかったように思うが、WSJが伝えたということでなんだか真実味が出てきたような感じがする。Financial Timesでも具体的な数字を伴った報道がされているようだ。
AMDに関して言えることは、K9、K10コアが、恐らくはフルスクラッチに見合うほどの性能向上を果たせない見込みになったという理由でキャンセルされたことで性能競争面ではやや手詰まり感があるということだ。
x86市場では従来のソフト資産を受け継ぎつつ性能を向上させるというのが重要だったが、しかし逆に、ソフト資産を受け継ぐことと性能向上は分けて考えてもいいのかも知れない。
もう一つは単にATiのリソースをAMDプラットフォームに多く振り向けさせたいというところで切実な要求があるのかも知れない。ただ、その場合はこれまで協力的だったNVIDIAやVIAに対してはあまり良い話ではないはずだ。その意味では不安要素はある。
以前書いたようにAMDはCPUの開発に必要である場合に限ってこのような買収をするはずだということに立ち返れば、やや長い話だがCPUコア内部、あるいは相当に近い場所にGPUを持ってくるつもりなのではないかということは言える。
しかしコプロセッサに関しては他社からベアダイを購入してAMD側でアッセンブルするというようなことも言っているので、単に外部演算プロセッサとしてGPUを持ってくるだけならば買収する必然性があるかどうかは疑わしい。逆にNVIDIAを含む他社を遠ざけることにもなりかねない。
となると、SOCのような形でコアの内部に持ってくるか、あるいはGPUではない形で、もっと根本的な部分で技術や設計を欲しているということだろうかということになる。
ATiは統合シェーダで一歩先んじており、つまりは最も強力なベクトル演算ユニットを持っているとも言える。浮動小数点演算器として専用のコアを作ろうとするときにATiを買収することが近道であると考えたのだろうか。
結局のところよくわからないし、実際に買収が実現したところでよくわからないままのような気はするが、面白いようになってほしいものだ。
