OCZ Vertexシリーズの登場というエポック
OCZの新世代SSDであるVertexシリーズの登場により、PCは明確にパフォーマンスのためにSSDを採用するという動機を得たように思う。
私が現在使用しているIntel X25-MはもちろんSSD市場に与えた影響は大きく、また、最近の大幅値下げにより現実的に採用されやすくなったのは間違いない。
最終的には製造プロセスの進化に伴い、物理的特性に問題が多くなるであろうMLCは廃れていくのかもしれないが、現状で現実的な価格にハイパフォーマンスのSSDが複数登場し、エンドユーザー向けの価格帯の中でパフォーマンスの観点からの競争が出てきたということはPCの歴史上大きな意味を持つことだろう。
ここへ来て雑誌やWebサイトでVertexシリーズのベンチマークが登場するに従って、その特性の優秀さにかなり肯定的な評価がされている。VelociRaptorやSASの高速HDDの市場を完全に奪ってしまうのはもはや当然の予想となった。
PC全体のパフォーマンスを考えるときに、SSDの採用がより進み、磁気ディスクはまさにストレージとしての立ち位置へと戻ることになり、市場は縮小するだろう。そして、SSDがこれからも急速に進化していく所以として、磁気ディスクが参入への技術的ハードルが高いのに対し、SSDはそれほどでもないということがある。丁度ガソリン車とEVの関係に近い。
磁気ディスクについて言えば、もはや容量増加があまり商品の価値とならないフェーズへ到達してしまっており、意外と急速に廃れてSSDへと取って代わられる可能性もある。そして磁気ディスクが過去のものとなったとき、それを前提としたOSやアプリケーションにより、コンピューティングも変化していくだろう。そう考えるとメインHDDに取って代われる存在としてのVertexシリーズは非常に面白い存在なのではないかと思える。
